22 Unexpected Things to Do in Donelson, Tennesse
Donelson is east of Nashville and is it’s own little city that is growing quickly! As a local in Nashville, and someone who works in Donelson, it’s got so many fun places to eat and drink. Donelson is even getting an Edley’s opening soon! Truly cannot wait.
Donelson is a straight shot down Lebanon Pike to downtown Nashville, and it is a quick 10-15 minute drive to Mt. Juliet. Mt. Juliet is also full of things to do, especially in the Providence area.

1. Tennfold Brewing
One of the newer breweries in Nashville is located in Donelson. Tennfold Brewing is the perfect atmosphere. It’s got tall ceilings, a look into the brewing area, a full kitchen, and a large covered patio. Tennfold is great for lunch breaks, happy hour, or with a group of friends. Their brisket cheesesteak is to die for, and any spot that has cheese curds has my heart.
On top of beer, they also have cocktails, wine, and a large whiskey list to choose from. Once you walk up, the smell of the smoker immediately makes your mouth water and your stomach growl. Their food menu is pretty large, but they tons of pizza to choose from. Check out their menus here: Tennfold Brewing.
2. Phat Bites
A local watering hole, Phat Bites is a chill spot to grab a yummy meal or a seat at the bar. Featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, you might have seen Phat Bites on the Food Network. The food is deli-style, but has tons of comfort food options as well. I go here so much, this place feels like a second home. The owner and the servers are quick to welcome you, and you will feel right at home.
Phat Bites has eclectic interior design, and there are often local musicians who play at nights and during brunch. Their bar is delicious, and their house beer, Phat Beer, is one of my favorite light beers to drink. They also have a patio if you’re wanting to sit outside! This is the definition of a local favorite. Check out their menus here: Phat Bites Menus.
3. Homegrown Taproom and Kitchen
You might start to notice that a lot of the Donelson area are local favorites. Donelson feels more like a close-knit community of people that don’t want to live in the hustle and bustle of downtown or East Nashville. Homegrown is evidence of this.
It is a quaint yet open and airy. Tucked into a row of amazing places (3 are on this list), it is a great place to go for a relaxing environment after work. Well, that’s when I go, but they also do trivia, darts, and events as well.
Homegrown has a large selection of local craft beer, and you can get a flight to try 4 at once. They also have delicious food that is fresh and so filling. Literally even the chips and salsa are a hit. Have a seat at their bar or go into their ”beer garden” for large windows and an open feel. They have homie hour and deals depending on the day, so check out their Instagram to see what’s going on for the week. Click here to see menus and more about them: Homegrown Taproom and Kitchen.
4. Caliber Coffee Co.
I can’t go any further in explaining Caliber before I say they have the best avocado toast I’ve ever had. A lot of avocado toast is similar, but the bread alone at Caliber is to die for. Their avocado toast is extremely well-priced, and you can add whatever toppings you want on it. I usually go for the bacon.
Now, I’m not a coffee drinker, but I’ve also been told they have great coffee (my coworkers always stop there on the way to work). I also tried their Butterbeer Frappuccino just to try it, and holy heck it was amazing. They also do Aussie pies that are so delicious.
I could go on and on, but this is a great local coffee shop. Be warned, it’s quite small, so seating can be limited at busy times, but they have a drive thru! Click on the ”Order Now” button to see their menus: Caliber Coffee Co.
5. Wine Down
Wine Down is great for enjoying a glass of delicious wine with friends, old or new. The owner was extremely sweet and talked us through the menu as well as offered suggestions (like their lavender liqueur, YUM). They have charcuterie and small plates to share with friends as well. They do events, live music, brunch, comedy, trivia, you name it. Check their Instagram for all the latest info on things coming up.
Also, the owner used to be on the road with some pretty big stars, so apparently they sometimes drop in to say hello, do live events, and hang out to support the owner. Again, definition of local. And it’s right next to West Coast Taco, Homegrown, and Phat Bites. The website doesn’t have much information on it, but you can see their hours and location if you click here: Wine Down Nashville.
6. Donelson Bowl
The oldest bowling alley in Nashville doesn’t need a real website, it only has a Facebook page. This place is the OG bowling alley, and although it looks the part, you can’t help but love it. Also, it’s always better to support local than chains! If you’re ever looking for a bowling alley that serves beer and just some good ole fun, search no more.
This is the bowling alley to come to! I mean sure, there are some nicer places around Nashville, but sometimes you just want a bowling alley like you grew up with. This is that place. It’s got everything you need, and you even have to play from the music machine for any music. Gotta love it. The bowlers here are regulars, but this place also supports people with disabilities, and they know, love, and respect their customers.
7. West Coast Taco
When the birria tacos went viral on TikTok, this is where I first tried them. Well, I’ve never tried them anywhere else, because this was all I needed. It may be a small chain, but it is delicious. I’ve tried a few different tacos from here, and they never miss. I sometimes DoorDash them, and I always get the al pastor tacos when I do. The smell that overcomes my house had my roommate wanting them too.
They have chips and salsa, guac, queso, and everything else you want. It’s in the same strip mall as Wine Down and Homegrown, but they just expanded it and now there are lots of seats to go enjoy. I even bring visitors here, because it feels like a hole-in-the-wall find. While this isn’t the website for the location in Donelson, this still gives you an idea of the menu: West Coast Taco Shop Menu.
8. Nectar Urban Cantina
Okay, I was going to talk about just the cafe because I had never actually eaten at their restaurant. I’m happy to say I recently went, and now I can say great things about the whole place. Fresh, fresh, fresh. That’s the one word I would use for Nectar, and yes, I would use it 3 times. I honestly don’t know how they do it, but they successfully run a cafe, and restaurant/bar that feel totally separate, but they are connected and both amazing by themselves.
They’ve got fresh juices, smoothie bowls, and healthy treats in the cafe. Then, they’ve got a bar full of amazing margaritas in so many flavors, as well as a long menu of fresh cantina-style food. The churros are so, so, so good. I had the sangria and the hibiscus margarita. I don’t typically go for margaritas but wow.
They also have a super large outdoor space where there are tables, a stage, and games for anyone. It is family friendly, a place to get amazing drinks, and a place to fuel your body with amazing food. For a look at their amazing menus (with pictures!) click here: Nectar Urban Cantina.
9. Craftsman on the Hill
No website – just vibes. Need I say more? This place is *technically* in Hermitage, but I’m going to count it. I know I’m always looking for more local bars, and while Donelson doesn’t have many, Craftsman on the Hill definitely hits the spot. Claimed to be the largest dart bar, it is really full of dart boards on every empty space on the wall. They also have pool tables, poker nights, karaoke, and a covered patio that they just added.
I can’t talk about Craftsman on the Hill without mentioning the amazing appetizers on their Happy Hour menu. I think I love everything on it. They have cheese curds, fried pickles, and all your go-to bar foods for a fraction of the price. Their drinks specials are always great, and the bartenders are always helpful. I think I’ve talked to the owner every time I’ve been there, and he is always so friendly and grateful for the support. Go check them out!!
10. MacNamara’s
There aren’t many Irish pubs or Irish food in Nashville. But, MacNamara’s is truly iconic. It’s two stories of fun and food and festivities. They have an authentic Irish menu, and their second floor has a full bar and live music. There really isn’t a time I don’t see this place busy.
It is on the pricier side, but for the experience, it’s worth it. I have yet to go to the second floor, but for information about their menu, live music, pictures, and more, click here: McNamara’s Irish Pub.
11. Sunflower Bakehouse
There aren’t many vegan options in Nashville, but this is one of them. It’s got a large vegan food menu, including burgers, hot entrees, sides, etc. But what makes this place really special is the vegan bakery. Plant-based food is nutritious and delicious. I actually was at Tennfold right next door for my birthday, and we walked right over and got a vegan cupcake. Now, will I say it’s the best cupcake I ever had? No, I just can’t lie to you.
But, their icing was incredible. At that point, I hadn’t had much vegan food, and didn’t really understand it to be honest. But now? My taste buds have evolved and I can definitely say it’s such a good alternative. Their menu is quite extensive, so I can’t mention it all here. But the bakery has cupcakes, cookies, scones, muffins, and upside down cakes. Click here to see their colorful menus: Sunflower Bakehouse.
12. Uncle Bud’s Catfish, Chicken & Such
I’ve only been here once but dang, these portion sizes are truly southern American. I don’t have much to say other than they have endless sides, or what they call ”fixin’s”. This includes fries, slaw, hushpuppies, white beans, etc. On Thursdays, they have endless catfish, and on Sundays they have endless chicken.
That being said, go here with an empty stomach. The food is fried and delicious, and it is endless. Be honest with yourself and don’t waste food, but eat what you want here!! It’s a true southern meal. I mean, you can even get frog legs and gator tail. To get your stomach growling for some good ’ole southern cooking, click here: Uncle Bud’s.
13. Party Fowl
I know, I know, Party Fowl is not local to Donelson. But, this location is less crowded and just the same great quality. It’s a great place to take friends to try some Nashville hot chicken. Be warned, their hottest chicken will have you hallucinating. It’s that hot. I don’t think I can even do more than mild, and I’ve really gotten good at eating spicy foods.
They have a full bar, some classic drinks, and some Party Fowl specials. When you order beer, they even give you magnetic chips that have letters on them. Collect enough letters to spell certain words, and you get free prizes. This is a great spot for getting out of downtown but still have the same feel. Click here for the Donelson location menu, hours, etc.: Party Fowl Donelson.
14. La Hacienda
If you ask me where to get Mexican food in Donelson, I would immediately say La Hacienda. While the other Mexican food places on this list are so, so good, this is where you’re going to get your more authentic Mexican dishes. I go here for lunch, happy hour, and dinner. I used to live down the street from them, as well as work down the street, and we even got to be friends with all the servers.
They treat you like family here, and the food is so, so good. The margaritas are strong, and the chips and salsa is always full. Make sure you go to the Bell Road location!! There is another location with the same name, but you have to go to this one. They have been through so much, but they always manage to stay in business thanks to their community. To check out their website and menu, click here: La Hacienda Donelson.
15. Nadeen’s Hermitage Haven
I know, I know, it’s not Donelson, but it’s close enough to include. This place is always packed and always has a line, but it is some delicious brunch food. I won’t say much about this place, because I honestly have only been one time. I just know that the food was great and they have a bar. Like, seriously their food is amazing and looks even better. Go to their Instagram to see more pictures! And click here to see more information and the menu: Nadeen’s Hermitage Haven.
16. Donelson Farmer’s Market
This place is so fun! And so underrated. I’m honestly scared even telling people about it, because it’s always so busy and full. This farmer’s market happen on Friday’s, May-October from 4:00-6:30pm. It is located at the Two Rivers Mansion, which is so unique and beautiful. The grounds are large, and there is just so much to see at this little haven in Donelson.
They’ve got tons of local farmers, shops, and food trucks. They are also right next to the Two Rivers Greenway which is so fun and connects to Shelby Park in East Nashville. Not to mention a dog park right next door! This is a great, off-the-beaten-path farmer’s market with the incredible quality you need. Click here to see more information: Hip Donelson Farmer’s Market.
17. Bavarian Bierhaus
Okay, okay, we are moving on to the Music Valley/Opry Mills area but is technically Donelson? Honestly, I always tell people to stop sleeping on this area! Yes, people go for the Grand Ole Opry or the Opryland Hotel, but there are so many great places around it!! And no, they don’t feel super touristy. So that’s what is included in the rest of this list.
Bavarian Bierhaus is one of those places. It’s got such good German food and beer. I always get the brats in a blanket and WOW. The brats are incredible, but their fries are so, so good too. They also have a good list of German beer. If you aren’t familiar with German beer, they can explain them to you or let you taste them! The restaurant is massive and they also have a large outdoor patio to sit on. Click here for more information and the menus: Bavarian Bierhaus Nashville.
18. The Catio
In need of some cat cuddles? Yeah, I know that’s not really a thing. But, you can play with kittens and cats here! There is a small fee, but then you are free to go and pet all the little kittens and cats that are running around! See one you like? You can adopt a kitten or cat here as well. Pro tip: don’t go after a kids’ birthday party, because the cats will be wired.
These cats have so many places to play, sleep, and hide. But it is so fun to go somewhere unique in Nashville and play with animals. I highly recommend going here if you need to relax, just want to play with cats, or are looking to adopt! Their website goes to a bad link, but look them up on Instagram @thecationashville
19. Scoreboard Nashville
Oh, Scoreboard. A classic. This place honestly has everything. They have a large outdoor area that feels like you’re on a beach somehow. But, they also have a little patio off the outdoor area with picnic tables and cornhole. Go over a little bit and you’ve got another bar.
Go inside and you’ve got booths and trivia, and another bar. Seriously, there are so many places to sit and hang with friends for some really great outdoor fun, live music, or food.
Yes, they have a big menu as well, and their hot chicken is seriously hot. You can get your classic bar food from their menu, or just order some of their fun drinks. Did I mention the bushwhackers? Because they have what feels like a million flavors. For information on events and menus, click here: Scoreboard Bar and Grill.
20. Ranch Hands Cowboylesque/Nashville Palace
Okay, wow. I didn’t know a mostly-bachelorette event would be SO fun. Recently, I went to the Ranch Hands Cowboylesque show and had the best time. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone. Located at the Nashville Palace, this show is sure to always sell out so get tickets in advance!!
Being a local, we didn’t think about going until pretty last minute, and the manager was SO kind to make it work for us. If you have a large group, definitely book in advance and get a table!! They have amazing and massive drinks, and even bottomless mimosas for $25 (on a Friday night, that was a great surprise).
The show is fun and interactive, and the crowd truly makes this so exciting and fun, but the boys were great too. They were entertaining and really worked the crowd. Make sure to tip them and the bartenders!! To find information relating to dates and to buy tickets, click here: Ranch Hands Cowboylesque. To see the menu and pictures at Nashville Palace, click here: Nashville Palace.
21. Smith Creek Moonshine Distillery
Why yes, I do try to convince my friends that a bar crawl at Orpy Mills is possible. A big part of the reason is Smith Creek Moonshine Distillery. They do free tastings, but they do work on TIPS!! So make sure to tip your bartenders. Now, I’ve done a lot of moonshine tastings living in Tennessee. This one has a lot of unique flavors and not in a bad way.
This is a great stop in Opry Mills, and you can buy any bottle after trying all their flavors. They also have jams and funny t-shirts to buy as well. To see more information from this location, click here: Smith Creek Moonshine, Nashville.
22. Cotton & Snow
Need a sweet treat? Look no further than Cotton & Snow. Located at the most picturesque purple house, this place is literally a sugar rush. Every treat you order is FULL of sugar, but in the best way. They also have a location at Fifth and Broadway!
Cotton & Snow has so, so many desserts including shaved ice, ice cream, cotton candy, milkshakes, and coffee. Even better, you can get a combination of these. I got the signature menu item named after Cotton & Snow – it is shaved ice with ice cream on top with cotton candy on top of those.
I honestly didn’t know that the combination of these could taste that incredible. They just complement each other so well. A great summer spot. For a better look at their tasty menu, click here: Cotton & Snow.
